I enjoy Shake Shack. I sometimes feel a little silly about this because everyone likes Shake Shack, especially all white, well-educated, upwardly mobile individuals, which is more-or-less what I am (I'm not that upwardly mobile, but I'm more upwardly mobile than not). Anyhow, I like the burgers and fries at Shake Shack, but I love their custard. It is so creamy and good. I'll often have a vanilla custard with shortbread cookies, caramel sauce and whipped cream, and it is one of my favorite desserts in the City of New York. That being said, Shake Shack has special flavors every month, and sometimes these flavors are excellent.
The other night I went to Shake Shack, having read that it would be the last night to get their Fig & Honey custard. Granted, I had not yet tried this flavor, but it sounded great and I wanted it! I won't go into the details, but they ended up not having it. However, they did have poached fig as a special mix-in, and so I got vanilla custard with poached fig. I took a couple of initial bites and thought it was pleasant, although not excellent. As I continued into this concoction, though, I discovered chunks of fig, and the melding of the custard and the fig became more pronounced, although always in a subtle, not too overpowering way. It wasn't long before I was in fig heaven, having one of the finest treats I've had in at least a couple of weeks.
Thank you, Shake Shack. And thank you god in heaven for creating figs.
